Snow Owls Quickly Take Off

Meet the Snow Owls, one of Niagara’s newest bands. If you’ve
ever been out to a local show, you’re bound to recognize one of
the guys from their prior appearances in other local bands. The
band is comprised of guitarist/vocalist, Josh Korody who
previously performed with In the Hills the Cities, along with the
band’s current bassist Joe Carlile. Korody also played in the
energetic dance–punk band, Contrastincredible! Richard Stanley
holds down the other guitar spot and has performed with the
Toronto new–wave outfit, The Smear Campaign. The drummer,
Matthew Sorge is best known for his work with his wife, Leslie
Butt at Faint and Hearted Records, but Sorge has had band
experience with the local rock ‘n’ roll combo, Life Like Life.
Not only does this Sunday mark the release of the band’s
first EP, Paint Your Skies, but it’s also the Snow Owls sixth show
together. Yes, you’ve read correct, six. After enlisting the help of
Stanley on bass guitar, a week later the band headed into the
studio to get songs recorded as soon as humanly possible. “I feel
without some sort of recording it’s hard to get people to come
out to shows or for promoters to be able to listen to something
so they can book you,” explains Korody. “Considering how we
rushed this recording, I think our engineer did the best he could
have [done], but next time my plan is to track the drums at a nice
studio in Toronto and do the rest myself. No one else has a better
idea of what sounds I want then myself and the band.”
Currently, all four members of the band are living in
different towns and cities and this poses a problem when it comes
to practices and communicating. “I have to be honest, it really
hurts the band creatively and personally. I don’t get to talk to my
bandmates too often, and it’s usually just on the internet,” says
Korody. “But, when it comes to shows and things of that nature,
it’s been going pretty good, we still manage to play fairly often
and a lot of that I owe to Matt.”
Copies of Paint Your Skies will be available at the show this
Sunday in limited quantities. The band only plans of releasing a
100 copies; all the albums are hand–made and individually
numbered.
Despite the band’s name, the music isn’t frosty or cold at all.
The song “Our Voices” begins with a picturesque dream–rock
landscape and an ambient sprinkling of guitar. The band quickly
picks up pace with a full–fledged sonic assault of upbeat drums,
jagged chords and a glorious usage of effects pedals. An
ambitious song that displays the band’s love for Sunny Day Real
Estate, and My Blood Valentine.
“Music is an art form, and I think there is some music that’s
a great example of that, and there’s some music that isn’t. Art is
about expression and if a band is truly expressing themselves on
a record, or live on stage, then that’s art. Just because a band
makes some messed up sounds doesn’t exactly make it art [just]
because it’s different,” notes Korody. “But if that’s the sound or
idea they feel strong about and they have put all this emotion,
feeling and effort into it, than you can’t argue what they’re doing
is art.” [JORDY YACK]
