April Shower Spring Fashion Powers

by Deborah Warner
April 14 - 20, 2011
If spring means the end of hockey season for the guys, then it must mean the beginning of a new and exciting sporting event for the girls; Spring fashion season. This is the time when we ladies will stop at nothing to find that right dress or jacket for the season. And when we find it, it’s almost as good as winning the Stanley Cup.

Emily Middleton, buyer and personal shopper at boutique clothing store, Milli, has the inside scoop on the latest trends out of Paris, Toronto and New York. In her expert opinion, embellishment is the key for making a statement this spring. “[There is] alot of embellishment on a standard T–shirt called the couture T–shirt concept.”
It is a simple shirt that has been beautified with “beading, lacing, sequins, tulle etc...[Brands like] Haute Hippie, Valentino Red and Lanvin exemplify embellishment.”
To continue on with the boldness of the season, Middleton is seeing impressionist painting–inspired prints. The prints actually blend together and resemble the look of a painting by Monet himself. And who said fashion isn’t art?
If you are the girl who always wanted to pair her pink tutu with leather studded boots, don’t worry. You aren’t alone. Middleton is seeing women striking the balance between femininity and masculinity. Women are pairing their “beautiful elongated blazer” over a jean or tightly fitted skirt. “[They are wearing] Chiffon flowing dresses with a cool suede vest over it...Feminine or very sexy. This creates very interesting contrasts.”
If you love all the new trends but want them from the decade in which they first arrived, Linda and Dalia of Sinister Vintage Clothing on King Street West in Hamilton may have what you need. These vintage lovers are definitely seeing the ‘70s inspired runways for spring influencing what they are buying for their store. “Every editorial, runway show or blog featured ‘70s–inspired clothing, so we have lots of girls coming in looking for a cheaper way to snatch these looks.”
It is not shocking that the styles of ‘70s fashion icons like Farrah Fawcett are coming around full circle. What may surprise you (and make you feel old all at the same time) is that the decade that gave you scrunchies, neon sunglasses and the original Power Rangers is now considered vintage. Yes, Sinister will be filling their boutique with early ‘90s wear. “[We] will be stocking up on anything neon, tie dye, or surfer inspired gear. Let’s put it this way, if you were a fan of ‘Saved by the Bell,’ you will love shopping at Sinister...”
With our planet being in dire straits and all how about recycling your old clothes? You know, the stuff you knew wasn’t ever coming back in style but still kept it in the back of your closet because it fit oh–so–well. Well guess what? Fashionistas Stephanie and Jacklyn, from popular fashion blog beaux–mondes.com hope that you kept your old jeans because this spring they are back! “Unpack your flared denim from high school and pair them with platform wedges and a tucked–in silk shirt.”
The Beaux Mondes girls are definitely feeling the earthy, feminine vibe from this seasons fashion trends. “We’re embracing our inner flower child with [Toronto designers] Ashley Rowe’s long loose fitting tie–dye tunic dresses and Rita Liefhebber’s dip–dyed dresses and knits in earthy hues like indigo and burnt orange. We also love full skirts and longer hemlines.”
This is clearly a fashion season of choice. Choose designer or vintage, feminine or masculine, earthy or luxury. But choose soon because girls will be body–checking one another along the boards to get their hands on these must–haves. V
