LA LUNA WILL LEAVE YOU FULL

by Leanne Kemmler
February 3–9
Few dining experiences excite me more than a trip to La Luna. It has a nice décor, friendly and efficient staff and delicious food with options to satisfy conservatives, vegetarians and adventurous eaters alike. On a recent visit, we ordered an a la carte feast. Appetizers included mushrooms ($5.95), cauliflower and tomato ($5.95) and Fattoush salad ($5.95). We ordered the chicken rice ($5.95) with curry sauce (additional $.55) to share and each had a Shish Tawouk ($4.95) sandwich as our entrée. Our appetizers came to the table quite quickly, despite a full house. The generous helpings were paired with two warmed pitas per order. We quickly ripped into the pita and stuffed it with the garlicky mushrooms and deep fried cauliflower. The cauliflower and tomato was covered in a fragrant and tangy tomato sauce that made for excellent dipping. Next arrived our Fattoush salad. This is a definite highlight as far as salads are concerned. The lemony oil and vinegar dressing perfectly complemented this chopped vegetable salad. Mixed with the lettuce and finely chopped parsley was cauliflower, radish, tomato, red onion and green pepper. It was, however, the crispy pieces of pita, playing the part of exotic croutons, which made the dish. We had barely finished our salad when the next course arrived: the curried rice. I’ve only ever had the rice with curry on it and I’ve had it enough times to know that curry never means hot. If you want your spicy to mean “tongue blistering” you should visit an Indian restaurant. At La Luna, the curry is mild but packs a flavourful punch. The flavour changes depending on when the curry was made and how long it has mellowed. It is humbly made with a handful of frozen mixed veggies and topped with pieces of marinated chicken. Even though I knew I’d be taking half of the rice home for lunch the next day, this menu staple was too good to pass up. Lastly, our Shish Tawouks arrived. They are called sandwiches on the menu, but they would be more appropriately named wraps. The Shish Tawouk is the chicken version of the basic wrap type: marinated chicken pieces mixed with pickles, tomato, onion and tahina sauce (sesame sauce with lemon and garlic—a heavenly topping) all wrapped in a pita, secured with foil and quickly grilled. I love the Shish Tawouk, but the same sandwich also comes with falafel, lamb, beef, homemade Lebanese sausage and more. To complement your meal there is quite an extensive list of mostly European wines, and for dessert there is Baklava, a traditional Middle Eastern delicacy. If you don’t usually explore exotic cuisine, La Luna is the perfect place to try. The food is very tasty without being strange or overly spicy. The prices are lower than average, with each a la carte option costing about $6; there are also combination platters that help take the guessing out of ordering. The menu has more than enough options to keep you interested for many visits. V LA LUNA 306 King St. W. Hamilton 905.577.0233
