Does the band admit to working in this way? Bravely, Sabatin
makes no bones about it and maintains an ‘if it ain‘t broke, don‘t
fix it’ attitude when conversation turns in that direction. “There
were definitely a few moments during the writing that we had to
stop and start tweaking what we had,” confides the singer. “For us
as writers though, we don’t regard artists like Neil Young, The
Band and Tom Petty as contemporary artists; we regard them on
the same level as traditional songs.
“That music is what we grew up with — it’s what our parents
listened to — and it might not have been cool, but that’s what we
liked listening to when we were kids. I think each of us in the
band had Neil Young records when we were 10 years old and we
loved it. They were such great, monumental songs that we don’t
even think about it as lifting stuff from other bands. Lead Belly,
Woody Guthrie and lots more get lifted 24 hours a day, seven
days a week. I can’t think of another way to get a particular sound
than to use the artist that created it.” V
