It was Sunday morning in America. It was a Sunday morning, like most other Sunday mornings in America. Some people were early to rise, perhaps preparing a breakfast for the family. Others were taking advantage of finally having nothing to do, and had yet to rise. The President, well, he was watching Fox News. It was a Sunday morning in America. the President, well, he had to respond to the images he saw on Fox News. And, so he did. It started when his propoganda arm ran a story seemingly for their Dear Leader’s personal consumption. It was about the rift in the Democratic Party between leader Nancy Pelosi and a small group of four progressive women known as the ‘squad’. In the week previous, the factions had bickered back and forth, with leaks of private meetings, attention–seeking tweets — just another week in America. But, on Sunday morning, as Fox disingenuously went about recapping these events, Trump flung himself into the fray.
He Tweeted: “So interesting to see “Progressive” Democratic Congress-women, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful nation on earth, how are government is to be run. Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements.” Now, I almost always try to truncate anything from Trump’s feed, but this one really floored me. It made me realize that no matter how much we stare at him, shake our heads at him, perhaps fear him, we rarely take the time to really look at what is happening. So, there’s the whole tweet thread. Read it back. Really, go back. Read it again, then read it again.
This is where the United States finds itself. While ICE raids cities in the quest to ramp up deportations, as inhumane concentration camps are built up on the border, as the administration does its best to manufacture a crisis they believe they need in order to retain power, these are the fronts that open up. Criticize America? Maybe, you’re not really American. Where did you come from ‘originally’? Go back there. This is just being disseminated for all to see from the maniacal fingers of the Commander–in– Chief of the world’s most powerful country. The only thing that could make it more depressing? Well, that happened too. After Pelosi found herself being used by Trump to make a racist attack on elected officials whom he seems to despise, she had to take to Twitter too! Yes, this is all very healthy and will work out for the best!
So, she criticized the President for the ‘xenophobic’ attack, and in the same breath implored Trump to work with Democrats for “humane immigration policy that reflects American values” before throwing in a #FamiliesBelongTogether with an exclamation point Trump would be proud of. While she has since grown stronger in her criticism of Trump and solidified her ‘support’ of those Democrats being attacked, the initial response is just truly stunning. To say nothing of the fact that we are now just watching this slinging of nonsense between insanely powerful people on social, it simply boggles the mind to think that Pelosi can possibly still be issuing such an asinine call for Donald Trump to find consensus on immigration. It is impossible to imagine an opposition leader showing less of a grasp on the situation. Donald Trump will never work for humane immigration policy. He wants inhumane immigration policy. He isn’t hiding that fact. He’s yelling it whenever he’s questioned about pretty much everything. He brags about raids, and deportation. He wants more of it. He doesn’t apologize for the camps, he praises them, and insists they too are infested with criminals (not asylum-seekers). He is not playing some strategic game for power in the future, as so many of Pelosi’s opponents in the past may well have been.
It is not about strategy, it is about wanting to be inhumane to people he considers Other. It doesn’t matter if they are immigrants or elected officials. It doesn’t matter if they were born in America or coming across the border. It only matters that they are not like him, they are not like the America he wants. So, while Pelosi seems to realize, as she tweeted at the same time, that Trump really only wants to “Make America White Again” she refuses to accept the truth of her own statement. You can’t think both of these things, Speaker Pelosi. They do not add up. The sooner you realize this, the sooner you can perhaps start to figure out how to help lead America out of this nightmare.V
